The Tamil month of Aadi is deeply connected to the worship of Amman deities. These include powerful forms of the Divine Mother such as Durga, Mariamman, Kali, and Bhadrakali. One of the most visually striking and spiritually meaningful offerings made during this month is the lemon garland. You can often see these fresh lemon garlands adorning the idols of the Goddess during temple festivals and Aadi pujas.
But why lemons? What makes this offering so significant during Aadi? Let’s explore.
In Hindu spiritual practices, lemons are believed to carry strong protective and purifying energy. They absorb negative vibrations, clear emotional blocks, and serve as barriers against evil eye or negative forces.
Temples dedicated to fierce forms of the Goddess—especially Mariamman and Bhadrakali—use lemons frequently in rituals. Lemons are known to cool and balance the fiery energy of these deities. Therefore, offering a lemon garland becomes an act of surrender. It is also a prayer for protection, healing, and blessings.
Devotees believe that lemons help remove drishti (evil eye) and counteract black magic or ill intent.
Lemons are simple but spiritually effective. Offering them reflects the devotee’s humble and sincere prayers.
During Aadi, the Goddess is worshipped in her most active and fierce forms. Lemon garlands help pacify her energy and bring peace to the devotee’s life.
In many villages, lemon offerings are believed to cure fevers, skin problems, or illnesses caused by negative energy.

To make a proper lemon garland offering:
Choose an auspicious Friday or Krithigai day in the Aadi month.
Select fresh, yellow lemons. They must be whole, clean, and uncut.
String them into a garland, often using counts like 21, 51, or 108. The number depends on your prayer or temple custom.
Visit an Amman temple. Temples like Samayapuram Mariamman or Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi are well-known for lemon garland rituals.
Offer the garland to the deity. Light a ghee lamp and perform a simple archana or homam, if possible.
If you can’t travel to a temple, you can still take part in the ritual. Priest Services allows you to offer lemon garlands from a distance. Our temple partners and experienced priests will:
Prepare fresh lemon garlands according to tradition
Offer them directly to Amman deities at prominent temples
Perform pujas and archanais in your name
This way, your devotion still reaches the Divine Mother—even from afar.
The simple lemon becomes a powerful spiritual tool when offered with faith during the sacred month of Aadi. Whether you seek protection, healing, or simply want to express gratitude, the lemon garland ritual connects you with the fierce yet loving energy of the Goddess. By participating at home, in a temple, or through remote services, you invite divine blessings into your life.
