Skanda Sashti, also known as Kanda Sashti, is a sacred day that celebrates the divine valor of Lord Muruga—also revered as Skanda, Kartikeya, or Subramanya. As the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the commander of the celestial army, Lord Muruga symbolizes courage, righteousness, and youthful energy.
This special occasion falls on the sixth day (Sashti Tithi) of the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) in every lunar month. However, the Sashti during the Tamil month of Aippasi (October–November) holds the greatest spiritual significance. Devotees across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and even abroad mark this day with fasting, prayer, and vibrant devotional practices.
Lord Skanda emerged as a radiant, six-faced warrior—Shanmukha or Arumugan—destined to defeat the demon Surapadman who threatened universal harmony. Riding his majestic peacock and wielding the divine spear (Vel) gifted by Parvati, Muruga stands as the embodiment of divine strength and protection. The Vel itself represents knowledge, power, and the ability to destroy ignorance.
Skanda Sashti marks Muruga’s triumphant victory over Surapadman. This event is not just a mythological tale but a reminder that good always overcomes evil. On this day, devotees seek Lord Muruga’s blessings to conquer personal fears, internal struggles, and worldly obstacles. Many believe that sincere prayers on Skanda Sashti bring relief from health problems, negative planetary influences (graha doshas), and life’s hardships.
Sashti Tithi aligns powerfully with Lord Murugan’s divine energy. This makes it an ideal day for:
Observing fasts and performing penance
Chanting the sacred mantra “Om Saravana Bhava”
Taking part in temple rituals
Reciting the Skanda Sashti Kavacham, a protective hymn in Tamil
Many devotees follow a strict or partial fast. Some undertake a six-day fast leading up to Skanda Sashti during Aippasi, while others fast only on the main day. They usually break the fast after sunset with simple vegetarian meals.
Temples dedicated to Lord Muruga, especially the Six Abodes of Muruga (Arupadai Veedu), attract massive crowds. Devotees offer prayers, perform milk abhishekams, and carry out kavadi processions. The six famous temples include:
Palani
Thiruchendur
Swamimalai
Thiruthani
Pazhamudircholai
Thiruparankundram
Composed by Bala Devaraya Swamigal, this powerful hymn offers spiritual and physical protection when recited with devotion. Many also listen to devotional songs and participate in bhajan gatherings.
Temples often dramatize the slaying of Surapadman in a powerful event known as Soorasamharam. Devotees watch with awe and emotion as the spiritual story comes alive, symbolizing the destruction of darkness by divine light.
People observe Skanda Sashti with faith, hoping to:
Overcome diseases and financial burdens
Gain courage to face challenges
Succeed in education, career, and relationships
Protect themselves from negativity and evil
Receive spiritual clarity and emotional strength
Couples struggling with childbirth, individuals facing marital or legal problems, and students facing exam stress often turn to Lord Muruga during this time.
While South India remains the heartland of this celebration, devotion to Lord Muruga now reaches far and wide. Temples in Delhi, Mumbai, and international cities like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Colombo hold special pujas, community feasts, and musical events to mark the day.
Even if you can’t visit a temple, you can still honor Lord Muruga at home:
Light a lamp in front of his image
Offer red flowers and fruits
Chant “Om Saravana Bhava” 108 times
Read the Skanda Sashti Kavacham
Donate food or feed animals
The most powerful offering remains your heartfelt devotion and sincere intention.
Skanda Sashti is not just a ritual—it’s a journey of inner awakening. Just as Lord Muruga vanquished the demon Surapadman, we too must rise above our fears, doubts, and limitations. With unwavering faith and spiritual effort, we can call upon the Vel of Muruga to guide us toward truth, strength, and peace.
May Lord Muruga’s blessings lead you on a path of righteousness, protection, and divine light.
