Skanda Sashti, also known as Kanda Sashti, is a sacred day that celebrates the divine valor of Lord Muruga—also revered as Skanda, Kartikeya, or Subramanya. As the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the commander of the celestial army, Lord Muruga symbolizes courage, righteousness, and youthful energy.
This special occasion falls on the sixth day (Sashti Tithi) of the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) in every lunar month. However, the Sashti during the Tamil month of Aippasi (October–November) holds the greatest spiritual significance. Devotees across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and even abroad mark this day with fasting, prayer, and vibrant devotional practices.
Lord Skanda emerged as a radiant, six-faced warrior—Shanmukha or Arumugan—destined to defeat the demon Surapadman who threatened universal harmony. Riding his majestic peacock and wielding the divine spear (Vel) gifted by Parvati, Muruga stands as the embodiment of divine strength and protection. The Vel itself represents knowledge, power, and the ability to destroy ignorance.
Skanda Sashti marks Muruga’s triumphant victory over Surapadman. This event is not just a mythological tale but a reminder that good always overcomes evil.
