Naamakaranam: The Sacred Hindu Naming Ceremony

When is Naamakaranam Performed?

Traditionally, Naamakaranam is performed on the 11th or 12th day after the child’s birth, although some families may conduct it after one month or during an auspicious time as per their family traditions and astrological calculations.

The Naamakaranam Ritual

1. Astrological Considerations: Many Hindu families consult an astrologer to choose the first letter of the child’s name based on their birth star (Nakshatra) and horoscope (Janam Kundali).
2. Puja and Prayers: On the day of the ceremony, a special puja is performed to invoke blessings from the family deity and the Navagrahas (nine planets).
3. Whispering the Name: The father or an elder family member whispers the chosen name into the child’s right ear, symbolizing the official recognition of the name.
4. Community Gathering: After the puja, the name is announced to the family and friends gathered for the celebration, making it a social and communal occasion.
