The Kanakadhara Puja is based on the Kanakadhara hymns produced by the Adi Sankaracarya. During his Brahmachari Bhikshatana (begging for alms), the Sankaracharya visited the home of a poor Brahmin lady. Though she had nothing to offer, she humbly gave him an Amla fruit, which touched Sankaracharya’s heart. Touched by the lady’s warm gesture, Adi Sankaracarya composed the stotram called Kanakadhara, praising goddess Mahalakshmi.
Upon composing the Kanakadhara stotram, which contains 21 hymns, the goddess Lakshmi appeared before him and understood the reason for his deep prayer. Sankaracharya requested the goddess to bless the poor lady with wealth. But the goddess Lakshmi replied that the lady had not performed any good deeds at her previous birth, thus causing her to live out of material wealth.
The Sankaracharya argued that she had now accumulated good Karma by offering me the amla fruit despite scarcity. Accepting his statement, the goddess Lakshmi granted the lady her blessings in the form of a golden rain of Amla fruits, transforming her life forever.
