Description

Karma Karyam – A Final Rite Ceremony for a Departed Soul.

The Karma Karyam involves multiple rituals performed on different days from day 1 to day 13 after the soul is released. These typically involve performing Karyam, Kriya, a Crematorium ritual, Asti collection, and Asti dissolve at water bodies. The preparations for the Karma Karyam begin once the person leaves his physical form. Relatives and friends are invited to show respect and offer condolences.

It is said once the soul has left the physical body, it moves to the Preta Loka (Ghost and Spirits World), performing Karma Karyam ensures the soul is transitioned to Pitru Loka (Ancestors world) successfully. The soul will remain in the Pitru Loka until it gets a new Janma (rebirth, reincarnation).

During the Karma Karyam ritual, the son of the deceased person or close ones performs a puja with the Pandit’s guidance. Various offerings are made to the fire and also to the Purna-Kumbha (Temporary spiritual idol). The Pinda or sesame rice balls are prepared, as it is said that the rice balls feed the hungry spirit (deceased soul) and help the soul navigate to the Pitru world without being stuck in the ghost world.

The final karyam also marks the end of the mourning and deceased soul rituals. After this ritual, the associated members can put an end to restrictions like entering the temple, food eating habits, and conducting auspicious ceremonies.

Benefits

  • Liberation and Peace: The Karma Karyam helps the departed soul reach Pitru Loka rather than getting stuck in Preta Loka. This ensures peace and sometimes moksha for the soul.
  • Neglect Pitru-Associated Doshas: By avoiding Karma Karyam, the associated family members may accumulate Pitru Dosha, which affects day-to-day life. If the Karma Karyam is performed in the right procedure, one can avoid this dosha.
  • Removes Obstacles and Grants Good New Beginnings: Karma Karyam can help one find the way to a good life and eliminate barriers that affect one's personal life and career.
