Tarpanam at Rameshwaram
Description
Tharpanam – An Ancestral Ritual to Pay Homage to Departed Souls.
Tharpanam can be further classified into Pitru Tharpanam and Karunya Tharpanam; this is collectively called 2-Part Tharpanam. Pitru Tharpanam is performed for those who grant you this physical body that you possess. Typically, your father, mother, or sometimes close bonds that are related to your parents (Grandfather). In contrast, Karunya Tharpanam is performed to appease non-ancestor relatives, friends, or even pet animals to whom you want to show a debt of gratitude.
This Tharpanam ritual is usually performed by a son or daughter to seek the blessings of their deceased ancestors. New moon days are the ideal days to execute the Tharpanam ritual. For time sunrise and noon are considered perfect times. There is also a Gunda Tharpanam, which is performed ten days after the person’s death, and Parheni Tharpanam, which is performed the next day after the annual Shraddha Day.
Following the Tharpanam ritual, rice balls are distributed among family members and blessed during the ritual. Offerings made during the ritual are disposed of into flowing water, typically a river, sea, lake, or other water body.
