Mahalaya Shradham is a special occasion dedicated to ancestors where death rites like Tarpanam take place to pay respect to paternal and maternal ancestors. The Mahalaya Shraddha is also known as Pitru Paksha in Hindu cultures. The food offerings are made to the deceased souls during the ritual to feed hungry souls and seek blessings. The Shraddha is performed on Tithi of the death of the individual's father, grandfather, or great-grandfather. If the Tithi or death date is unknown, the Shraddha can be performed on the Amavasya that falls in the Ashwin month. Performing the Mahalaya Shraddha brings happiness to the family and helps ancestors to fulfill their desires.

Description

Mahalaya Shradham – A Fortnight Ancestral Ritual to Connect With Deceased Souls.

Mahalaya Shradham or Pitru Paksha is a 15-day lunar period (fortnight) that falls in the Bhadrapada month. In this period, the person (son) associated with the deceased soul performs Tarpana (Death Rite) to appease the soul and seek blessings. The trained priests perform this ritual along with the associated person. Mostly, two priests are invited to perform the ritual, one priest facing the north and the other priest facing the east. The individual performing the Shraddha sits facing the south-east.

Failing to perform Shraddha or Tarpana might cause a curse from ancestors, which causes misfortunes and discomfort in the family and professional life. The negative consequences of neglecting Ancestors Shraddha have also been mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, where great Karna, after his death, could not afford food as whatever he touched, including food, became gold as he had donated Gold but not food to hungry ancestors. Then, to pay debts, Karna was permitted to return to the earth for a 15-day period, which is now called Pitru Paksha.
